The full arrival of summer marks the beginning of beach season, and one of Oita City’s most beloved coastal spots is Tanoura Beach. While the surface offers sunshine and relaxation, just a little offshore lies a mysterious and beautiful underwater world waiting to be explored.
On July 1st, Tanoura Beach officially opened for the season. It’s a popular destination for families and visitors, thanks to its easy access and scenic views.
But there’s more beneath the surface—Tanoura is also one of Oita’s top diving spots. As you dive in, one of the first to greet you might be the Asian sheepshead wrasse, a friendly, 70 cm-long fish known for swimming right up to divers without fear.
This time of year also brings a magical sight: swarms of moon jellyfish (mizukurage) drifting gently in the current. Experts say this seasonal phenomenon occurs when plankton levels rise, attracting jellyfish in search of food.
From curious fish to jellyfish-filled waters, the ocean near Tanoura Beach is full of surprises—a side of this familiar beach that many have yet to see. It’s a perfect mix of adventure and natural wonder, right at the doorstep of Oita City.
